Loss of nitric oxide reduces benefits of banked blood

Soon after collection, banked blood begins losing nitric oxide, which impairs its ability to dilate small blood vessels, and thereby perfuse tissue, according to results of two studies appearing in the October 8th Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
